The English Classics

This week sees the first major Flat races of the season with the Craven meeting at Newmarket which includes several trials for the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas at the same track at the start of May. This day last year produced three subsequent Classic winners and the beauty of Flat racing at this time of the year is the prospect of unfulfilled potential impressing at the highest grade.

Kingman has set the bar at a high level for the 2,000 Guineas and Australia will have to be the best Aiden O’Brien has trained to beat him. As Kingman has been backed Australia has drifted for the first colts Classic of 2014. Kingman is bred for the Guineas while Australia has a better Derby pedigree. However, Coolmore are chasing the Holy Grail of the Triple Crown.

The Irish boys thought they had a wonder horse in Camelot but the bid for winning three English Classics was thwarted by Encke in the St Leger at Doncaster. The syndicate believe Australia is even better but the acid test will be at Newmarket in just over two weeks. Kingman is already being compared to the great Frankel so the Guineas looks a tremendous race in prospect.
